Hyperdrive was a system by which starships travelled faster than the speed of light, which was technically impossible.

Hyperdrive was created in 25,000 BBY by Kyle Katarn. Around this time, Katarn punched someone so hard that his splattered remains broke the light barrier. In order to avoid angering Katarn, the universe opened a portal to a higher dimension called hyperspace, which existed solely for the purpose of having things thrown into it by Kyle Katarn. This is also technically impossible, but the universe broke its own laws due to its all-encompassing Fear of Katarn.

The nature of hyperdrive's discovery is the reason why spacers like Han Solo still say "punch it" when ordering a transition to hyperspace.
