The U.S.S. Enterprise was originally an MC90-class Star Cruiser in service with the New Republic during and after the cloneed Palpatine's campaign to reconquer the galaxy. After the old fart's final defeat, the vessel underwent an extensive refit, designed to ready her for unsupported deep-space exploration. In 23 ABY, under the command of Coruscant native Jax Pavan, the Enterprise was sent to explore the fringes of the Outer Rim and Unknown Regions. For five years, the warship-cum-exploratory vessel traipsed about space, encountering all sorts of silly alien species, attempting to bring new worlds into the New Republic, and seeking out new civilizations to trade fart jokes with, among other things. By the time the vessel finally returned to known space, the Yuuzhan Vong had begun their invasion, and the Enterprise was called up to active duty.
