The term bucket referred to a lot of things. Besides being a device for the transportation of both liquid and solid matter, it was also a Mandalorian colloquialism for one's battle helmet.
When Captain Sillybollocks accidentally dropped his bucket at the Battle of Yoshi's Island, the Mandalorian soldier next to him accidentally kicked it. Almost immediately, the nameless warrior was shot dead, and thus the phrase "to kick the bucket" was born.
