- "Reroute all power to the energy shield. Prepare for ground assault."
"No way, man! I've had it with you and the whole damn system! Power to the people!"
"Look, the Empire will be here any minute. Would you quit rebelling and prepare for ground assault?"
- ―General Carlist Rieekan, trying to reason with a typical Rebel trooper
Rebel troopers were the cannon fod—that is, backbone of the Rebel Alliance military. They were given nifty uniforms with dome hats and uniforms that looked like farmer's coveralls with black vests. At heart, Rebel troopers were rebels, wild rebels. Many of them were part of the Imperial Army, but defected against the rigid hierarchy and amoral command structure... only to join the Rebel Alliance and be forced to take orders from a general who, typically, was another Imperial defector and in many cases was one of their former commanders.
In short, Rebel troopers were irritable little sods, especially since nobody respected them... Rebel pilots got all the awards, recognition, and Twi'leks, while the poor Rebel troopers got slaughtered in ship's corridors and on ice planets and were then forced to stand around in an homage to Triumph of the Will while pilots and random smugglers got all the accolades.
